For the first time in last 20 years, there is demand growth all over the world for steel. Global steel demand is rising on the back of accelerated infrastructure activity in China, CIS and India, housing boom in USA and white goods resurgence in Europe.
Iraq reconstruction work is expected to fuel further demand for steel over the next three years. China is consuming steel like never before for its infrastructure with investments such as Three Georges projects on Yangtze as well as apart of its build up to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the Shanghai Exp in 2010. Construction activities account for 50 % of the Chinese steel consumption of 232 Million tons. Huge factories are being built as China rides the manufacturing wave. Urban infrastructure is galloping as China builds more cities due to higher industrialization.
The demand supply gap is expected to increase and this will drive steel prices northwards, even as the global steel industry is not prepared for this demand onslaught.
Everything seems hunky-dory about China. The worrying factor for Indian Steel Industry from China is that while China continues to be the largest consumer of steel in the world by a large gap, it is also the largest producer of steel in the world by a similar large gap. China has doubled its steel output from 90 Million Tons in 2000 to 180 Million Tons 2003. Another worry is the competitiveness of this steel in the export market in case China becomes steel surplus in the future (Source www.Indiainfoline.com May 03, 2004).
SPSL have taken this as an opportunity to divert its attention from Chinese Market and to concentrate in the USA, European Countries, developing African Countries and other Western Countries.
We believe that in the last few years we have built a strong foundation on which we can base a sustainable long-term growth. We are well positioned to leverage opportunities and manage the challenges that will arise in the domestic market.
The export potential of Indian Steel was not fully exploited till recently due to inadequate availability to meet the domestic demand as well as lack of proper facilities and technology for producing steel meeting the stringent international standards. While recognizing “Exports” as a key focused area, your Company has already undertaken necessary steps for market development so as to emerge as a truly global player through its technologies edge and cost competitiveness.
OUR GOALS:
·To be “one of the top ten most admired companies” in the country.
·Employ the “best manpower available” not only in India but also from Overseas Countries and train / develop our human resources who are highly motivated, dedicated/committed and productive.
·To implement the “TQM” (Total Quality Management) and “TPM” (Total Productive Management) culture and be always customer oriented.
·Continuously upgrade our existing plant & equipment by adopting latest process and technology.
·We aspire to be the “foremost manufacturer and supplier of colour coated and galvanized strips in Asia and amongst the top three in the World, for the year 2010”, with a view to ensure customer delight by timely delivery, good performance, excellent quality, reliability and aesthetics of our products at globally competitive cost.
·We plan to achieve a production of “500,000 MTA with sales turnover of Rs. 2000 Crores in FY 2005-2006 and 1,000,000 MTA with a sales turnover of Rs. 5000 Crores in FY 2009 -2010”.
·We aspire to be one of the “Fortunate 500” Companies and further to become an “Economic Value Adding” and “Wealth Generating” company for the sustainable growth of our organization and its Stakeholders.
·We wish to create a “cleaner, greener and healthier environment” in and around our premises by developing and implementing afforestation projects and improve the quality of life of our employees and all stakeholders including customers and the society and community in which we operate.
STRATEGY FOR THE FUTURE
After the success story of F. Y. 2003 – 04, we have ambitious plans for 2004-2005. SPSL is in the process of implementation of major expansion of their cold rolling / galvanizing and colour coating complex to achieve an installed capacity of 500,000 MT. per annum.
In the project expansion plan under review, following project units are being proposed to be added to the existing plant.
·Modification in existing pickling line to increase its production capacity from 2,50,000 TPA to 500,000 TPA of hot rolled coils.
·We are also going for ISO 14001 Certification in the year 2004 an Environmental Management Project.
·A new 4 HI reversed Cold Rolling Mill No. 3 with Automatic gauge control and Automatic shape control will be commissioned. This will have an installed capacity of 250,000 TPA with the 1400 MPM (one of the highest speed in India).
·The state of the art Continuous Hot Dip Galvanized line No. 2 with vertical furnace and ceramic induction galvanizing pot which will be the most modern continuous galvanizing line in India with highest speed so far i.e. 180 MPM with installed capacity of 300,000 TPA.
·Highly sophisticated & most modern Colour Coating Plant no. 2 is being commissioned with the installed capacity of 300,000 MT per annum. This line will have a process speed of 180 MPM and entry & exit speeds of 220 MPM. It will be one of the fastest Colour Coating line in the World. This line will be equipped with latest technology like pre-cleaned section is Ultrasonic / Electrolytic which is the best in the World. “This technology is patented by SPSL”.
·Vertical Coater with Near Infra Red (NIR) baking oven which is the first time in the World with water based polymer passivation.
·To cater to such large expansion, power distribution system with emergency power backup is planned and is being implemented. Similarly water circulating system and utility are designed to cater such large expansion and is being implemented side by side with the main plant equipment.
·A massive afforestation project is also ‘’on’’ in and around the plant which will make environment conducive for work.
